Dr. Anita Stampley
Anita Stampley, DVM, DACVS is a native of Chicago. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Denver and a veterinary degree from Tuskegee University's School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her internship at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and surgical residency at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Following her residency she joined the faculty of the University of Florida to teach small animal surgery. There she received the Outstanding Resident of the Year Award, the Phi Zeta Award for Excellence in Research, and the Outstanding Faculty Service Award. She left academia to start a mobile surgical practice in Florida.
She then returned to Athens where she joined the faculty of the University of Georgia. She taught small animal surgery for several years. After leaving the university she started a mobile surgical practice in northeast Georgia. Dr. Stampley and her husband, Dr. Myron Downs, co-founded Athens Veterinary Surgery Center. Dr. Stampley is Board Certified in small animal surgery and is a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. She has over 30 years of experience in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. She has particular interest in knee stabilization and fracture repair. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and is the recipient of the GVMA Presidents Award. She and her husband, Myron, have four beautiful children, one dog, and a cat.
Dr. Myron Downs
Dr. Downs is a native of Granada Hills in southern California. He began his veterinary career working for his father who was a mixed animal practitioner in the San Fernando Valley. He received his undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University and veterinary degree from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed his internship at the University of California at Davis College of Veterinary Medicine and surgical residency at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He later received his PhD at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine.
Dr. Downs returned to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine where he taught small animal surgery for several years. He received the Outstanding Clinician Award and was selected twice as commencement speaker. Dr. Downs is Board Certified in Small Animal Surgery and is a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He and his wife, Dr. Anita Stampley, co-founded Athens Veterinary Surgery Center. He has been in practice for over 30 years and his interests include knee stabilization and trauma & emergency surgery. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. He is a former President and Treasurer of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and is the recipient of the 2014 GVMA Veterinarian of the Year Award. He also served on the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors and American Veterinary Medical Association House of Delegates. He and his wife, Anita, have four beautiful children, one dog, and a cat.
